It's back to school time!! I couldn't let that pass without commemorating it in some small way~lol

Of course, when you have teens, sometimes they are just "too cool" to take Moms crocheted creations to school with them, so I designed my pencil pouch (which I think is absolutely cool enough for school!) to put my spare hooks in! Hence, the Not JUST for Pencils Pencil Pouch was born...

Crochet Pattern

Materials Used:
30-40 yds worsted weight yarn, in your choice of colors. (Model created with Pink, Light Gray, Yellow, Tan and Black)
Size G/6 (4.50mm) crochet hook
Yarn needle

Size/Gauge:
Gauge is not important to this project. Finished model measures 8" long (with flap closed) and 3.75" wide, and will fit standard sized ink pens, pencils, crochet hooks and even scissors!

Stitches Used/Abbreviations:
ch-chain
sc-single crochet
hdc-half double crochet
FLO-work in front loops only of indicated stitch(es)
BLO-work in back loops only of indicated stitch(es)

Instructions:
Flap Slot:
With Gray, ch 16. Hdc in 2nd ch from hook, and each remaining ch. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Set aside for now.

Front Piece:
Row 1: With Black, ch 2. Work 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook. (3 sts)
Row 2: ch 1, TURN. Work 2 sc in 1st st. Sc in next st. Work 2 sc in last st. (5 sts)
Row 3: ch 1, TURN. Sc in each st across. (5 sts) Fasten off Black. Join Tan.
Row 4: ch 1, TURN. Work 2 sc in 1st st. Sc in each of the next 3 sts. Work 2 sc in last st. (7 sts)

Assembly:
Place the Flap Slot on top of the Front piece, directly over rows 28-29 (Gray). Stitch only the ends to each side of Front piece, leaving the center open.
Place the assembled Front piece on top of the Back piece, with wrong sides together. (Make sure your Flap will easily fold down over the Front piece. Line the colors of each piece up so they match, and starting at the top side of the Front piece, Sc down the side, toward the point. Work 3 sc in the point. Sc up the opposite side, until you reach the end of the Front piece. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
You may choose to sc the outer edge in all one color, or you can change colors with the piece, as I did.

Small Not Knit Decoy Nest~FREE Crochet Pattern

Who else has noticed an abundance of wasps suddenly appear at their homes?? I'm all for nature doing its thing, but I really don't want aggressive stinging critters that close to my front door!

I have seen other decoy nests, and heard they work wonders, so I decided to design my own, and I really love how it turned out!

Not Knit Decoy Wasp Nest
Crochet Pattern

Materials Used:
Approximately 50 yds worsted weight yarn
Size G/6 (4.50mm) crochet hook
Plastic bags for stuffing

Size/Gauge:
Gauge is not important to this project. Finished model measures approximately 6” long.

Stitches Used/Abbreviations:
Ch-chain
Rnd-round
Hdc-half double crochet
Hdc2tog-half double crochet two stitches together
3rd loop-stitches are worked in the horizontal loop behind (or under) the top two loops
Sl st-slip stitch

Since this bad boy is going to be hanging outside in all kinds of weather, I decided to be economical, and use plastic bags for stuffing, which works great! It ends up being big enough to get your point across, but small enough to not be intrusive...
I've also added a few pictures of working in the 3rd loop, in case you are unfamiliar with that! Keep in mind~I'm a lefty, so it might look backwards to you~lol..It works the same either way!

Instructions:
(Stuff as you go~I used 3 plastic grocery bags to stuff mine!)
Rnd 1: ch 2. Work 10 hdc in 2nd ch from hook. Join. (10 sts)
Rnd 2: ch 1. Working in the 3rd loop, from here on, work 2 hdc in each st around. Join. (20 sts)

WOW! It has been SO long since I've posted a free pattern here, I MAY have forgotten how to do it! Time for me to get back in the swing of things, right?

I figured I'd start out with something super simple, and super cute...I've been playing around with these guys for a while, so I want to share my sweet little Stars and Sprites with you! If you have any craft markets coming up, they may be just the perfect addition to your lineup~They work up SERIOUSLY fast!

Stars and Sprites
Crochet Pattern

Materials Used:
Leftover bits of worsted weight yarn, in your choice of colors, and a few yards of plush yarn in black.
Size F/5 (3.5mm) hook for worsted weight yarn
Size H/8 (5.00mm) for plush yarn
Small amount of stuffing
Two size 8mm safety eyes
Yarn needle

Size/Gauge:
Gauge is not important to this project. Finished models measure approximately 1.5” across for Stars, and 3” for Sprites.

Stitches Used/Abbreviations:
Ch-chain
Rnd-round
Sc-single crochet
Sc2tog-single crochet two stitches together
Hdc-half double crochet
Dc-double crochet
Sl st-slip stitch

A quick note~I used Premier Yarns Just Chenille for my Sprite. It is soft and squishy, and so easy to work with! You could very easily substitute a fun fur or eyelash yarn, for a fluffier effect.
For my Stars, I used the new Premier Minikins yarn~If you love cotton, go get some of this! It's so soft, with amazing drape for a cotton yarn...it is also rated a weight 2, so it's the perfect contrast to the chenille yarn!
This is not a paid endorsement, by the way...I purchased all my own yarn, and really do love it~lol
Anyway~On to the patterns!

Instructions:
Star: (Make 2)
Rnd 1: ch 2. Work 10 hdc in 2nd ch from hook. Join. (10 sts)
Rnd 2: ch 1. *Work {1hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc} all in next st. Sl st in next st*. Repeat (*) around. (5 points) Fasten off.
Place 2 finished Stars back to back and stitch through both layers around entire outer edge, working one sc in each hdc st, 2 sc in each dc st, and one sl st in each sl st. Stuff lightly before closing, if desired.

Sprite: (Use fun fur, eyelash, or plush yarn. Stuff as you go)
Rnd 1: ch 2. Work 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join. (8 sts)
Rnd 2: ch 1. Work 2 sc in each st around. Join. (16 sts)
Rnd 3: ch 1. *Sc in next st. Work 2sc in next st*. Repeat (*) around. Join. (24 sts)
Rnds 4-6: ch 1. Sc in each st around. Join. (24 sts)
Rnd 7: ch 1. *Sc in next st. Sc2tog*. Repeat (*) around. Join. (16 sts)
Rnd 8: ch 1. Sc2tog, 8 times. Join. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for weaving. Weave tail through final sts and pull tight to close.

Eyes: (Make 2, using worsted weight, or lighter yarn)
Ch 2. Work {3 sc, 3 hdc, 3 sc} all in 2nd ch from hook. Join. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Place a safety eye into the center of each eye, before sewing eye in desired positions on face.

If desired, use some contrasting colors of scrap yarn to stitch on little splashes of color here and there on your Sprite. Once your Stars and Sprites are complete, you can add hanging loops, or keychain hardware, to make adorable little ornaments, keychains, or backpack buddies!

Fit Beard around, and under Nose, and stitch in place.
Place one arm on either side of body, at rnd 9/10 (just under the brim of the hat) and stitch in place.
Cut a short length (about 3-4”) of yarn to create a hanging loop. Stitch your loop to the top of the hat. Weave in all your ends, and you are done!

Mask Up! Keychain Ornament FREE Crochet Pattern

With our newest mask mandates in place, I can't help but think of ways to make it all fun...So, I came up with a friendly reminder!

He's super quick and easy to make, and a fun way to remember to "Mask Up!" I'll be using this one as a keychain, but I'm also making more, in different colors, to hang on our tree this year ;)

Use a yarn needle, and black yarn to stitch on whichever expression you like. Weave in all ends.
Your mask emoji makes a cute keychain, backpack buddy, or hanging ornament/decoration!

36 Minute Mask~FREE Crochet Pattern

Yep~another face mask! Nope~that's not a typo! It literally took me 36 minutes, from first stitch to last to whip this up for a friend <3
Of course, I made sure to have a pocket, for the disposable filters, but you can also make it with just one layer, for a mask cover, if you prefer...

Many people have asked what to use for filters in these masks...I have been told that coffee filters, cut to fit, or blue shop towels (the kind that come on a roll, like regular paper towels) work wonderfully! Also, keep in mind~These masks are NOT medical grade, and will NOT stop the virus! Be sure to properly dispose of your filters after each use, and throw your masks in the wash after each use! It would be best NOT to use wool, as it is recommended to wash them in hot water ;)

I hesitated publishing this pattern, because these are NOT medical grade face masks...They will NOT stop the coronavirus...But, if you want to protect yourself and others while on a quick run for necessities, or out walking with your family, they do offer some level of protection, while saving our limited supply for medical personnel :)
These masks have a pocket built-in on the back side, for you to use your own removable, disposable filters. Please be sure to throw the disposable filter away, upon your return home, and then just pop the mask into the washing machine!

Materials Used:
Approximately 65-70 yds. Of Worsted weight yarn
Size H/8 (5.00mm) crochet hook

Materials Used:
50-60 yds. Lion Brand Mandala Fluffy yarn (Model created with Fire Goby)
Size K/10 1/2 (6.50mm) crochet hook
Small amounts of worsted weight yarn for features
Size G/6 (4.25mm) crochet hook for features

Rnd 2: ch 1. Work 2 sc in each st around. Join. (16 sts)
Rnd 3: ch 1. *Sc in next st. Work 2 sc in next st*. Repeat (*) around. Join. (24 sts)
Rnd 4: ch 1. *Sc in each of the next 2 sts. Work 2 sc in next st*. Repeat (*) around. Join. (32 sts)
Rnds 5-13: ch 1. Sc in each st around. Join. (32 sts)
Rnd 14: ch 1. Sc in each of the next 16 sts. Skip the last 16 sts. Join. (16 sts)

Horn: (Stuff before stitching on)

Rnd 2: Working in BLO from here on, *Sc in each of the next 2 sts. Work 2 sc in next st*, 2 times. DO NOT JOIN. (8 sts)

30 Minute Fluffy Earwarmer~FREE Crochet Pattern

I was recently scrolling through Lion Brand Yarn's website, and this Mandala Fluffy yarn literally SCREAMED at me! I heard it! As soon as I saw it, I got SO many design ideas...So, I contacted them, and told them about my ideas, and they sent me this gorgeous yarn <3

30 Minute Fluffy Earwarmer
Crochet Pattern

Materials Used:
35-40 yds. Mandala Fluffy yarn (Dolphin)
Size N (9.00mm) crochet hook
Yarn needle

Size/Gauge:
S,M,L
Gauge: 3 Hdc rows=2"
5 Hdc sts=2"

Stitches Used/Abbreviations:
ch-chain
hdc-half double crochet

As soon as I posted the picture of my beautiful fluffy yarn, people had questions...Is it as soft as it looks? YES...Is it roving? NO...It is more like a brushed boucle yarn. Is it very difficult to work with? Surprisingly~NO...You get to use a large hook, and it seems to glide very smoothly, without a lot of snagging.
I was fortunate enough that I didn't make mistakes this time, so I didn't have to test the difficulty of frogging, because I have a feeling that will be more difficult~lol...I also used the wrong side as the right side, and brushed it lightly with a soft bristle brush, so all the fluffy fiber was free to show all it's glory :)
So, do yourself a favor, and grab up some of this amazingly fluffy yarn! You can make some pretty awesome gifts at a very good price, cause this earwarmer only used about half a cake! You can find it here...

Instructions:
Row 1: ch 41(45,49). Hdc in 2nd ch from hook, and each remaining ch. (40(44,48) sts)
Rows 2-5: ch 1, TURN. Hdc in each st across. (40(44,48) sts) Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Assembly:
Fold each short end into a "V", and sandwich them together. (See photo) Using a yarn needle (or your crochet hook) whip stitch through all 4 layers at once. Fasten off. Weave in ends. Turn earwarmer inside out, and smooth your join a little. Use a soft bristle brush, if desired, to pull all your fibers to the front side.
