Bonny Bunny Surprise

Another sweet little design featuring Lion Brand Bonbons yarn!
The Bonny Bunny Surprise would make a great Easter basket stuffer, or tiny playset for on-the-go fun.
Egg measures approximately 3" tall, by 2.25" across the widest point.
Hollow log measures at just 2" long, and the tiny bunnies fit inside! They even have a little grass playmat included!

Bonny Bunny Surprise
Materials Used~
1 package Lion Brand Bonbons yarn~Cotton "Nature"
Size F/5 (3.75mm) crochet hook
1 small button
Small amount of stuffing
Yarn needle

Gauge is not important to this project.

Stitches Used/Abbreviations~
ch~chain
rnd~round
sc~single crochet
sc2tog~single crochet 2 stitches together
hdc~half double crochet
hdc2tog~half double crochet 2 stitches together
dc~double crochet
Ball~ball stitch~To complete the Ball stitch, yarn over, insert hook into indicated stitch, yarn over, and pull up a loop, *yarn over, insert hook in same st, yarn over pull up another loop* Repeat (*) 2 more times, for a total of 9 loops on hook. Yarn over, and pull through all 9 loops at once.Magic Circle-Make a large loop by putting the yarn tail behind the working yarn
(the yarn coming from the skein), leaving at least a six-inch tail until you become
familiar with this method. With your hook, draw the working yarn through the
loop, so you have one loop on the hook. Now, you can start working your
stitches in the ring, just as you would with the chain method. You will pull the tail
tight, once all stitches are worked in the ring, leaving a nice, tight closure.

Egg~
Rnd 1:Ch 2~Work 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join. (8)
Rnd 2:Ch 1~Work 2 sc in each st around. Join. (16)
Rnd 3:Ch 1~*Sc in next st, work 2 sc in next stitch*. Repeat (*) around. Join. (24)
Rnd 4:Ch 1~*Sc in each of the next 2 sts, work 2 sc in next st*. Repeat (*) around. Join. (32)
Rnds 5-8:Ch 1~ Hdc in each st around. Join (32)
Rnd 9: ch 1~Sc in each st around. Join. (32)
Rnd 10: ch 1~Sc in each of the next 10sts. Ch 22~join to 1st st of rnd. (10 sts, 22 chs)
Rnd 11: ch1~Sc in each of the 10 sts. Sc in each of the next 10 chs~ch 2, skip 2. Sc in each of the last20 chs. Join. (32)
Rnds 12-13: ch 1~Hdc in each st around. Join. (32)
Rnd 14: ch 1~*Hdc in each of the next 2 sts~hdc2tog*. Repeat (*) around. Join (24)
Rnd 15: ch 1~*Hdc in next st~hdc2tog*. Repeat (*) around. Join. (16)
Rnd 16: ch 1~Hdc in each st around. Join. (16)

Sew a button to center front of egg, on the bottom section, to line up with button hole.

Ears~
Ch 5~Sl st in 2nd ch from hook. Sc in each of the last 3 chs. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.
Sew ears center top of head, after rnd 7 is completed, to avoid confusion on placement.

Bunny~
Rnd 1:Ch 2~Work 4 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Do not join, place stitch marker, if desired. (4)
Rnd 2:Work 2 sc in each st around. (8)
Rnd 3:*Work 1 sc in next st, work 2 sc in next st*. Repeat (*) around. (12)
Rnd 4: Sc in each st around. (12)
Rnd 5: Sc2tog, 6 times. (6)
Rnd 6:Work 2 sc in each st around. (12)
Rnd 7:Sc in next st. Work 2 sc in next st. Sc in next st. Work 2 sc in next st. Ball in next st. Sc in each of the next 2sts. Ball in next st. Sc in next st. Work 2 sc in next st. Sc in next st. Work 2 sc in last st. (16) *Sew ears in place now. Stitch eyes on, and stuff head lightly.

Tail~
Use CC: Create a Magic Circle~ch 1. *hdc, sc* 3 times in ring. Join. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.
Sew tail over opening of rnd 11 on bunny.

Rnd 1: Ch 20~Join to 1st ch, being careful not to twist chain. Ch 1~hdc in each ch around. Join. (20)

Sew desired number of leaves and flowers to log and grass. Weave in all ends.

Tuck all of your finished play pieces inside of your egg, and button it closed! Egg will easily hold 1 log, 1 grass, and 2 bunnies. You may need to "mold" it a bit with your hands, to make it look pretty, as pieces inside tend to poke out at odd angles.
You can also sew leaves and flowers to the outside of the egg, for decoration, if you wish!

thank you so much for the pattern. I am having trouble visualizing the log. I made the pattern and on row 9, I am short a number of stitches to join in the round. It turned out cylindrical and not sure what to weave to make the shape of logs. The bunnies and grass and egg are adorable!

I'm a little confused by your question...The log is supposed to be cylindrical, with a smooth edge on one end, and a wavier edge on the other Rnd 9 is the last rnd, which is where the "jagged" appearance of a broken log is created. Are your other st counts coming out even?

The ball stitch is the front feet. It helps it stand up.

I have now done 3 sets of these and working on 4th set. I decided to try to stuff the bunny body this time to see if it made a difference - so after round 10 I lightly stuffed the body and I think it actually may help hold the bunny's shape especially after being "stuffed" in the egg with the other items. Hope this helps.

Lordy, Lordy! These are waaay too cute! I make things for the kids at Cook Children's Hosp. in Ft. Worth. My daughter (13) is a patient there. And I am making them for the kids for Easter. My son is a teacher, last year I made him a hat to wear at Easter at his school ( he loves costumes) The kids all loved it, so another teacher asked if she could borrow it to wear for the kids at the local hospital, needless to say, he gave it to her and she in turn gave it to a little one in the cancer ward. I wish I had this pattern in time to make them for those little ones, I will be ready for them next year.

I am on my fourth set. I have made a number of changes, not necessarily better but easier for me. I am using the Lion Brand bon bons cotton yarn. Changed to a D/3 hook and preferred the result. I made a tiny crochet "flower " instead of the button. I shaped the finished egg around a small plastic egg, dipped it in liquid starch, shapped some more, carefully removed egg, shaped some more and let dry. With a different set, I stretched the finished egg over a large plastic egg dipped in liquid starch, shaped and stretched some more, and let dry. I left the plastic egg inside that one, using the same color plastic egg as crocheted egg. Rather than making two ears and two leaves, I just made a sc and continued on to make the second ear/leaf. Thank you Trifles and Treasures for this adorable pattern. I am enjoying it so very much! Happy Spring! and a Blessed Easter.

Are there any corrections to these patterns? When I was making the grass and the numbers didn't come out right. Rnd 1 was fine. Rnd 2 said 17 sts but it should be 18 sts. So this makes all Rnds wrong but not by a little bit but very different. I didn't get as many sts as printed after each round.. Could you check this out? The grass came out ok but like I said the rnd sts didn't come out right

So cute! Just finished a partial set for my daughter. She loves it. My mom made a few last year and I actually remembered it before Easter! I freehanded a little carrot to go with it. And I did a ch 2 then chained 4 and did the second ear so they were one piece for sewing on and that worked well for me. Tomorrow I’ll find some dark brown yarn in my stash and make the log and let my daughter pick a second bunny color. Thanks for sharing your pattern!
