I am a genius! Ok...maybe not...but I was playing with some colors the other day, and realized, with just a few simple color changes, and some minor details, you can add CHARACTER to most anything!
Really...the possibilities are endless! I whipped up a simple phone cozy, and just by changing out 2 colors, I got these 2 characters :) Follow me for the complete pattern~ |

Cozies with CHARACTER
Crochet Pattern Materials Used: Worsted weight yarn in Yellow, Brown, Blue, White, Black, Grey Size H/8 (5.00mm) crochet hook 1 medium button (for closure) 2 small black buttons (for pupils) Needle and thread Yarn needle Size/Gauge: Finished cozies measure approximately 6” tall and 4” wide. Gauge: 7 sc sts=2” 8 sc rows=2” Stitches Used/Abbreviations: Ch-chain Rnd-round Sc-single crochet Hdc-half double crochet Bphdc-back post half double crochet Sl st-slip stitch |
Basic Cozies, with simple color changes

Instructions:
Basic Cozy:
Rnd 1: ch 13. Work 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sc in each of the next 10 chs. Work 4 sc in last ch. Working the opposite side of the chain, sc in each of the next 10 sts. Work 2 sc in last st. Join. (28 sts)
Rnd 2: ch 1. Bphdc in each st around. Join. (28 sts)
Rnds 3-21: ch 1 Sc in each st around. Join. (28 sts)
Rnd 22: ch 1. Sc in each st, until you reach the center front st (for me, this was 4 sc from join). Ch 15. Sc in each remaining st. Join. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
TO CREATE CHARACTERS:
For Spongeboy~
Begin with Brown, and work rnds 1-3 of Basic Cozy. Fasten off Brown after rnd 3. Join White.
Work rnds 4-5 in White. Fasten off. Join Yellow.
Work remainder of cozy in Yellow.
For Minimen~
Begin with Blue, and work rnds 1-5 of Basic Cozy. Fasten off Blue after rnd 5. Join Yellow.
Work rnds 6-14 in Yellow. Fasten off. Join Black.
Works rnds 15-16 in Black. Fasten off. Rejoin Yellow.
Work remainder of cozy in Yellow.
Eyes: Make 2 (or 1 for Minimen, if desired)
Rnd 1: With Blue(for Spongeboy) or Brown(for Minimen), ch 2. Work 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join. Fasten off. Join White. (8 sts)
Rnd 2: ch 1. Work 2 sc in each st around. Join. (16 sts) For Minimen~fasten off White. Join Grey.
Rnd 3: ch 1. *Sc in next st. Work 2 sc in next st*. Repeat (*) around. Join. (24 sts) Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Nose: (For Spongeboy)
Rnd 1: With Yellow, ch 2. Work 4 sc in 2nd ch from hook. DO NOT JOIN.
Rnds 2-3: Sc in each st around. Join. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Teeth: (For Spongeboy~Make 2)
With White, ch 3. Hdc in 2nd ch from hook. Hdc, ch 1, sl st in last ch. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Assembly: (See photos below for visual aid)
Using a needle and thread, sew 1 small black button into center of each eye. Center eyes at approximately rnd 15, and sew in place.
For Spongeboy, center nose between eyes, and sew in place.
For either, using a yarn needle and Black yarn, stitch on a mouth, in any shape you desire.
For Spongeboy, center Teeth close together under line of mouth, and sew in place.
For Spongeboy, using a yarn needle and Black yarn, stitch eyelashes on top of each eye.
