I got this STUNNING yarn in the mail from Red Heart last week, and just had to get right to work designing something with it! Of course, I'm back to dreaming of long, sunny days at the beach, fun browsing at the Farmer's Market, or road trips with my project bag, so what else would I design?
This is the new Red Heart Super Saver Ombre yarn, in Baja Blue~I absolutely LOVE it! The color changes are long and gradual, and they make a beautiful finished piece, no matter the stitch pattern you use...

Crochet Pattern
Materials Used:
Red Heart Super Saver Ombre yarn~Baja Blue
Size H/8 (5.00mm) crochet hook
Stitches Used/Abbreviations:
Ch-chain
Rnd-round
Sc-single crochet
Hdc-half double crochet
Dc-double crochet
Sl st-slip stitch

*You can vary the finished size of this bag by adding or subtracting pattern row repeats!

Instructions:
Rnd 1: ch 25. Work 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sc in each of the next 22 chs. Work 4 sc in last ch. Working the opposite side of beginning ch, sc in each of the next 22 sts. Work 2 sc in last st. Join. (52 sts)
Rnd 2: ch 1, TURN. Work 2 sc in each of the next 2 sts. Sc in each of the next 22 sts. Work 2 sc in each of the next 4 sts. Sc in each of the next 22 sts. Work 2 sc in each of the last 2 sts. Join. (60 sts)
Rnd 3: ch 1, TURN. Work 2 sc in each of the next 2 sts. Sc in each of the next 26 sts. Work 2 sc in each of the next 4 sts. Sc in each of the next 26 sts. Work 2 sc in each of the last 2 sts. Join. (68 sts)
Rnd 4: ch 1, TURN. Sc in next st. Work 2 sc in each of the next 2 sts. Sc in each of the next 28 sts. Work 2 sc in each of the next 2 sts. Sc in each of the next 2 sts. Work 2 sc in each of the next 2 sts. Sc in each of the next 28 sts. Work 2 sc in each of the next 2 sts. Sc in last st. Join. (76 sts)
Rnd 5: ch 1, TURN. Sc in each of the next 2 sts. Work 2 sc in each of the next 2 sts. Sc in each of the next 30 sts. Work 2 sc in each of the next 2 sts. Sc in each of the next 4 sts. Work 2 sc in each of the next 2 sts. Sc in each of the next 30 sts. Work 2 sc in each of the next 2 sts. Sc in each of the last 2 sts. Join. (84 sts)
Rnd 6: ch 1, DO NOT TURN. Bphdc in each st around. Join. (84 sts)
Rnds 7-12: ch 1, TURN. Sc in each st around. Join. (84 sts)
Rnd 13: ch 1, DO NOT TURN. Hdc in each st around. Join. (84 sts)
Rnd 14: ch 1, DO NOT TURN. *Skip 1 st. Dc in each of the next 3 sts . Cross your work, to dc in skipped st, sandwiching the 3 dc sts inside the crossed st*. Repeat (*) around. Join. (84 sts)
Rnd 15: ch 1, DO NOT TURN. *Skip 4 dc sts. Work 4 dc in next “hole” between crossed clusters of previous rnd*. Repeat (*) around. Join. (84 sts)
Rnd 16: ch 1, DO NOT TURN. Working in BLO for this entire rnd, sc in each st around. Join. (84 sts)
Rnds 17-19: ch 1, TURN. Working in BLO for the entire rnd, sc in each st around. Join. (84 sts)
Rnds 20-43(or to length desired): Repeat rnds 14-19, in order, with the exception of TURNING at the beginning of rnd 14, from here on.
Rnd 44: ch 75, TURN. Skip 14 sts. Sc in each of the next 28 sts. Ch 75. Skip 14 sts. Sc in each of the last 28 sts. Join.

To print the pattern, hover over the "share" button & click on "more", this will bring you to a page with multiple options. You can use either "clean print" or "print friendly". Both worked for me. I hope this will help.

There is no "print" button, you have to copy and paste, I think. Than's what I do!

Like Diane said...hover over the share button at the top of the page where it says "like, tweet, pin it, share". There is an option there to print these pages....

Look at the top of your screen on the right 3 dots click on the 3 dots lt should bring up a list and print is in that list
Or you can click on the first word holding down the Left mouse button and move mouse to the end let go of right button click right button and hit copy and then go to your writing program and right click and past it then print from your program
Works good for me

You can't download this pattern-its typed directly on the webpage, however, you can use the Print Screen option on your computer, or you can use "PrintFriendly.com" to print it out. I am unable to add the Printfriendly button to my site, as the code is incompatible with one of the other codes already embedded-I'm sorry for that!

I have a quick question, row 6 says bphdc, wondering if it is a back post half double crochet or if it should be a half double crochet in the back loop only. Thank you, still fairly new to crocheting.

Is anyone else having issues with row 44? When I do it the way it is stated the handles are on the ends of the bag and not in the middle as pictured.

I'm doing row 44 in this manner:

CH 1, TURN. SC in first 14 stitches. Chain 75. Skip 14 stitches. SC in next 28 stitches. Chain 75. Skip 14 stitches. SC in next 14 stitches.

This should get the straps in the middle. I will figure out row 45 when I get to it. Hope this helps.

My finished model measures approximately 16" tall, by 10" wide, by 3" deep, and I used between 1/2 & 2/3 of a skein of the Red Heart Super Saver Ombre yarn, which is 10 ounces, or 482 yards.

I just finished the bag. Turned out beautiful. Love the pattern. I am a beginner and could not figure out the handles so just made plain handle with double crochet stitches and hooked to other side. Still turned out great and I know my granddaughter will love her Christmas present.

I absolutely love this stitch and the colors; I would like to use this stitch to make curtain tiers and maybe even an afghan. However, I do not have much experience with patterns. Is there someway to write these stitches with multiples of ___ + ____ so that I can make it to the size I need.

I'm still new at trying to read and learn patterns. your instructions on the pattern Ocean Serenity, say to turn or DO NOT TURN.
I'm sorry but I'm confused by this instruction. Is this pattern not worked in the round. If not in the round, then back and worth? I would be so appreciative if you could explain this to me.

Thanks for the wonderful free pattern! It's beautiful!
I too had a bit of a problem with round 44, making the handles balanced on both sides and in the middle. I just compensated from where I started the round to make sure the 14 skipped stitches were centered in the front and back. *easy fix* :)
I love the pattern that rounds 14 and 15 made!

bphdc means back post half double crochet.
Just started making this yesterday. I had a bumpy start but am now almost halfway done. For those wanting to make the back a little bigger, make sure your single crochet rounds (rows 7-12) are multiples of 4. Right now I'm making the bag as-written, but I might try another bag in another color that is larger.

I am a newly self taught crocheting. I’m still learning daily. I know this is an old post, but could someone please clarify something for me in the very first row (pretty sad I know, but I’m just learning to read patterns and instructions). When it says “ Working the opposite side of beginning ch“..does that mean turn your work and start on that side? I’m so confused already!!! Please help! Thanks :):)

Yes! You work your initial stitches in the chain, and when you get to the end, continue on the other side of the same chain.

Good Lord. I too am new, but I thought I could handle this. Row 5 is the half double crochet which is no problem. Row 6, I thought I had done something like this before,but apparently not. So, you chain one, skip the next stitch, double crochet in the next 3 stitches. THEN what do you do. I thought you looped over the stitch you had on the hook (like getting ready for a double crochet) then crossed it back to the bottom of the skipped stitch Oh hell, I don't know what I mean. Can someone explain or do you have a video of it?

Hi Trish, I’m new to some of the stitches in this pattern and I used YouTube for some explanations/ videos, especially the “cross over” stitch in round 14 and bphdc etc. Hope you’re getting through it okay.

Hi Helen and Trish, I too found the You Tube videos and other crocheting sites valuable for new stitches, Trish you sound like you had the crossover stitch right. My problem was the count in rows 14 and 15, I just couldn't get the pattern to tie in with the 84 stitches, wondering if anyone else had this problem.

I’m starting round 20-49 which says to repeat rounds14-19 “with the exception of round 14 TURNING at beg of rnd 14, from here on”. Round 14 was originally a Do Not Turn round as were rounds 15 & 16, so does this mean I only turn for round 14 now (and not the next two rounds) I didn’t know if “from here on” applied to just that 14 round or all in that pattern sequence. I hope that makes sense. Thank you.

Each time you start the repeat with row 14 you turn because you have ended on the wrong side. I can't speak for the author but this is how I did it and it turned out nicely

I love this pattern and your instructions. If I am reading the pattern correctly, the last 2 rows are done on the wrong side. Is this right or did I miss something?

I am not new to crocheting but this is the first time I have seen a tote bag pattern that requires turning on many of the rows!
The BPhdc is a new stitch for me as well.
Love the look of this pattern but a video surely would have been helpful!
Using the Red Heart Ombre style of yarn and going to give this lovely pattern a try!
