I hesitated publishing this pattern, because these are NOT medical grade face masks...They will NOT stop the coronavirus...But, if you want to protect yourself and others while on a quick run for necessities, or out walking with your family, they do offer some level of protection, while saving our limited supply for medical personnel :)
These masks have a pocket built-in on the back side, for you to use your own removable, disposable filters. Please be sure to throw the disposable filter away, upon your return home, and then just pop the mask into the washing machine!

Pleated Face Mask with Pocket
Crochet Pattern

Materials Used:
Approximately 65-70 yds. Of Worsted weight yarn
Size H/8 (5.00mm) crochet hook
Yarn needle

Size:
Small fits Child 2-10 years
Large fits Teen/Adult

Stitches Used/Abbreviations:
Ch-chain
Sc-single crochet
BLO-work in back loops only of indicated stitch(es)
Sl st-slip stitch

Front and Back views...

Instructions: (Instructions are written for size Small, with changes for Large in (parenthesis))
Row 1: ch 30(35). Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, and each of the next 4 chs. Sc in each of the next 19(24) chs. Sl st in each of the last 5 chs. (29(34) sts)
Row 2: ch 1, TURN. Sl st in each of the 1st 5 sts. Sc in BLO of each of the next 19(24) sts. Sl st in each of the last 5 sts (Both loops). (29(34) sts)
Rows 3-16(18): Repeat row 2.
Ear Loops: After last row, DO NOT FASTEN OFF. Ch 20(25). Sl st in opposite corner of short side. Ch 1, TURN. Sl st in each ch. Sl st in each st across long (top) edge. Ch 20(25). Sl st in opposite corner of short side. Ch 1, TURN. Sl st in each ch. Sl st in corner. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Pocket: Row 1: Rejoin yarn in 1st sc of bottom edge. Ch 1. Working through both loops, sc in each of the next 19(24) sts. (19(24) sts)
Rows 2-12(14): ch1, TURN. sc in each st across. (19(24) sts)
Fasten off after last row, leaving a long tail for sewing. Fold Pocket piece up to match top row of front. Using a yarn needle, stitch each side of the pocket to the front piece. Fasten off, weave in ends.

LOVE this. I was going to try and make my own to give away to some health care workers that I know and was not sure how to do it. But this is the picture that I had in my head. Thank you.

Just an FYI, the healthcare workers cannot use these. I've already been in touch with the United way, the red Cross, and my local hospital which is Hartford Hospital in Connecticut, a major hospital. These will not protect from COVID and since they cannot control what kind of filter goes in them they can't make sure they're compliant. Also they want disposable face masks, not those that would have to be laundered. Further, depending on people's allergies certain types of fiber especially animal fiber could pose a serious allergic reaction. I had planned on making a bunch to give away as well but learned otherwise that they can't be accepted.

You can use whatever filter you like. I personally use coffee filters or shop towels, cut to fit.

I read the pattern and understand it, thank you. However the photo is a little different than the pattern in regards to the ear straps or ear loops. If it was simply a chain it would look different It looks as though what you did in the picture is a icord type of loop, is that correct? It's definitely not just 20 chains. I like the idea of the thicker ear loop and would appreciate feedback Thank you very much

You are correct! You chain 20 (or 25) then join it to the other side, then you slip stitch in each chain. That gives a thicker loop, and is in the directions ?

As a writer, I feel that you are very excited about your book launch. I mean, who wouldn't be right? Seeing your creation being published and share with the world is just the best feeling for a writer. I am also an aspiring writer, and I am hoping that I can have the same chance. Hello! I am currently not selling them, but thank you for your interest! This tutorial was made so people could make them on your own. Ebay currently has cheap furbies from $10-20. Should take you an hour or two to make. I could recommend getting a dremmel to shave off the pokey bits. If you make one I would love a picture! -K
