Remember I said I came up with two chemo caps designs that I just loved? Well, this is the 2nd one!
I got an amazing shipment of yarn from Lion Brand Yarns just for this hat, and I couldn't be more pleased with how it turned out! This hat is also part of My Sweet Potato 3's Cancer Challenge 2015, so I hope you'll join us in the challenge...

For this hat design, I was going for a rustic, woodsy look...kind of like pine trees covering a mountain top. I wanted something soft, warm, and appealing to the guys! Lion Brands Heartland yarn fits the bill perfectly!
It's a #4 worsted weight acrylic yarn, with a nice sheen to it. It's incredibly soft, and so easy to work with, and the colors are rich and vibrant.
I chose three that compliment each other very well. This pattern can be worked with just one, or more colors, but I found three to be the "sweet spot" to show off the pattern the best, and give the look I was going for.

Crochet Pattern

Materials Used:
Lion Brand Heartland yarn, in 3 colors (Model created with Color A~Acadia Tweed, Color B~Kings Canyon, and Color C~Bryce Canyon)
Size H/8 (5.00mm) crochet hook

Stitches Used/Abbreviations:
Ch-chain
Sc-single crochet
Hdc-half double crochet
Dc-double crochet
LDC-long double crochet, or spike stitch~To work a spike stitch, yarn over, insert hook in indicated st~generally 1-2 rows beneath current work~yarn over, and pull up a loop even with your current work. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops. Yarn over, and pull through remaining 2 loops.)
RSC-reverse single crochet, or crab stitch~To work a RSC, *insert hook into previous st. Yarn over, draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook*. Repeat (*) for entire row.
Fpdc-front post double crochet~work dc stitches around the front of the post of indicated stitch(es)
Bpdc-back post double crochet~work dc stitches around the back of the post of indicated stitch(es)
Sl st-slip stitch

*EDIT~I have added instructions to make a larger hat, as I have received several messages that the original is coming out a bit small. Now there are 2 sizes :) I also join each rnd in the beginning ch 1. If you join in the 1st st, then only sl st in each of the next 2 sts for rnd 8.
Instructions:
Rnd 1: With Color A, ch 2. Work 10 (12) hdc in 2nd ch from hook. Join. (10(12) sts)
Rnd 2: ch 1. Work 2 hdc in each st around. Join. Fasten off Color A, join Color B. (20(24) sts)
Rnd 3: ch 1. *Sc in next st. Work 2 sc in next st*. Repeat (*) around. Join. Fasten off Color B, join Color A. (30(36) sts)
Rnd 4: ch 1. *Hdc in each of the next 2 sts. Work 2 hdc in next st*. Repeat (*) around. Join. (40(48) sts)
Rnd 5: ch 1. *Hdc in each of the next 3 sts. Work 2 hdc in next st*. Repeat (*) around. Join. Fasten off Color A, join Color B. (50(60) sts)
Rnd 6: ch 1. *Hdc in each of the next 4 sts. Work 2 hdc in next st*. Repeat (*) around. Join. Fasten off Color B, join Color A. (60(72) sts)
Rnd 7: ch 1. *Work 3 dc in next st. Skip 2 sts*. Repeat (*) around. Join. (60(72) sts)
Rnd 8: Sl st in each of the next 3 sts. Sl st into space between clusters. Ch 1. *Work 3 dc in space between clusters. Skip 3 dc sts*. Repeat (*) around. Join. Fasten off Color A. Join Color B in space between clusters. (60(72) sts)
Rnd 9: Ch 1. *Dc in next space between clusters. Work 1 LDC into the top of the middle skipped st from rnd 7. Dc in same space between clusters. Skip the next 3 sts*. Repeat (*) around. Join. Fasten off Color B. Join Color C in space between clusters. (60(72) sts)
Rnd 10: Ch 1. *Dc in next space between clusters. Work 1 LDC into the top of the middle skipped st from rnd 8. Dc in same space between clusters. Skip the next 3 sts*. Repeat (*) around. Join. Fasten off Color C. Join Color A in space between clusters. (60(72) sts)
Rnds 11-16: Continue repeating rnd 10, working your spike stitch into the skipped middle st of each previous rnd, and changing colors, in order, for every rnd (B, C, A) *NOTE~For a longer hat, continue repeating rnd 10 to desired length.
Rnd 17: You should be back to Color A~ch 1. Hdc in each st around. Join. (60(72) sts)
Rnds 18-20: ch 1. *Fpdc around next st. Bpdc around next st*. Repeat (*) around. Join. Fasten off Color A. Join Color B. (60(72) sts)
Rnd 21: ch 1. RSC in each st around. Join. Fasten off. Weave in all ends.

This is absolutely gorgeous but I do have one question. This is a Mens Chemo hat but what size does the H hook make? All the men in my family have quite large noggins so I thought I'd ask before I start the project. ;)

I'm a guy who crochets and has a bigger head so I often have to modify patterns to fit. I whipped this up last night because I love the pattern and the colors and happen to have versions of them in my stash waiting for a project. It was WAY too small for me and I even added several extra color rounds to make it a bit longer. I'm a bit of a tight crocheter and even stitching more loosely didn't help. It comes out more adolescent/teen sized. The biggest flaw for me was that the crown came out way small for the diameter of my head (I kind knew right then this was going to be a long shot!). The number of rows also seemed small to me, that's why I added a few just for kicks. What I will say is that this pattern is fun, the stitches look great, and I LOVE the overall pattern it just needs to be tweaked for bigger heads. Thank you to the author for the pattern, I will definitely be using it as a go to for gifts in the future!

Josh, Thank you so much for the response. I actually did go ahead and make one this weekend to surprise my husband but 1, it didn't fit him and 2, he didn't like the design as much as I did. I used an I Hook, just in case, and I used I Love This Yarn, LionBrand Heartland and a smidgen of Caron Simply Soft. I did Black, Yellow and White, for the Steelers. Like you, I did do my stitching loosely and did about 19 rows of LDC instead of the 16 as instructed. The final product is 21" circ and about 8 1/2" long. It's cozy on me and since it's loose it is stretchy but it was uncomfortable on my hubby. (So I scored myself a gorgeous hat, still not complaining) The length was right for him but the width was about 2 inches shy. Might want to try either a J hook or use the H with chunkier yarn. It is absolutely gorgeous though!! Heartland is super soft and stretchy and has flecks of beautiful colors. The pattern was really quite easy to follow and I had no trouble figuring anything out. :D

I have a question about the end of round 8. When joining, do I join at the beginning of the round, as in the first slip stitch, or at the chain of the first cluster? It looks like someone else asked the same question almost a month ago, but I don't see the reply.

I actually ch2 and then dc in the same stitch as the ch2 but I think she means you'll join in the top of the dc so that it's uniform around and not a dip in the row. :) I hope that helps a little.

Hi, your hat is very cool. Question, though.
When you go from rnd 3 to rnd 4 it states 36 to 48 stiches. But check this math out. If you go to 2 hdc around you will double the 36 and end row with 72. I tried 1 hdc, then 2 hdc next, all around and got 54 total. If you take half of 36 = 18, then for 1 hdc = 18
, then for 2 hdc = 36, you get
total = 54 ??
To get 48 stiches, not sure how you would increase 12 stiches from the 36??
Hope this makes sense.

Please keep in mind as a chemo hat, it is supposed to be a bit smaller because chemo patients have usually lost all their hair, and so they don't have that volume between the hat and their scalps. I find for chemo patients it fits pretty good. I do work loosely, but not sloppy so that may be a difference. For my hubby who has a crew cut, I still needed to make the edited size, but his head is a little erm... rounder.... than average. :)
